A call for urgent Government intervention on the Isle of Wight’s social care system has been made by Joe Robertson MP in a letter to the Minister for Care.
Highlighting the Island’s ageing population and mounting pressures on local services, Mr Robertson warned that the current situation is placing unsustainable strain on both social care and hospital capacity. The letter raises serious concerns about vulnerable patients being discharged far from home and reports of patients being treated in unsuitable conditions due to delays in discharge. He has urged the Government to take immediate steps, stressing that national reforms must account for the Island’s unique challenges.
Joe Robertson MP said, "The crisis in social care is so bad on the Island that we cannot wait for the Government to get its act together with proposals to solve the problem nationally. We need an Island solution delivered by Government. St Mary's is discharging vulnerable and frail patients to the mainland because we do not have care capacity on the Island. The situation is inhumane and once again our unique challenges as an island are not recognised. I have written to the Minister for Care demanding urgent intervention."
