Joe Robertson MP has met with Ryde’s Dover Park Primary School Headteacher Mr Kirby to tour the school and discuss the important reading initiatives they have in place to support children’s literacy.
Mr Robertson’s personal experience as a previous county co-ordinator for a national school reading charity is demonstrated through his long-standing support for programmes that promote the importance of early literacy.
Mr Robertson said, ‘The school runs a range of fantastic schemes, including story time, book clubs and the Schoolreaders programme- an invaluable initiative where volunteers come in to listen to children read. I was especially impressed by the school library. I was also pleased to learn our very own East Wight resident Jeanne Jones recently was awared as the Schoolreaders National Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations, Jeanne!’.
