Joe Robertson MP has congratulated Phil Jordan on his re-election as Leader of the Isle of Wight Council and pledged to continue working with him on the key issues that matter to Island residents.
In light of ongoing discussions around a devolved mayoral deal for the Isle of Wight, Mr Robertson welcomed Cllr Jordan’s ambition to "finish the job" but called for firm negotiation to secure a deal that truly benefits the Island - starting with greater control over ferry services.
“Congratulations to Phil Jordan on being re-elected as Council Leader. I look forward to continuing our work together on the major issues facing Islanders,” said Joe Robertson MP. “When Phil says he wants to ‘finish the job’ on a devolved mayor, that must include securing the right powers - and our red line is clear: no deal should be signed without mayoral control over the ferries.”
Mr Robertson recently met with the Minister responsible for local government and devolution, who confirmed that the Department is open to granting such powers - provided the Council makes a strong and coherent case.
“The Minister told me last week that his Department is open to the idea,” Mr Robertson added. “Now it’s time for our Council to step up and negotiate hard. Islanders deserve a deal that delivers real change, not just a new title.”
