Joe Robertson MP was honoured to present Hidden Heroes Awards to prison staff at HMP Isle of Wight, recognising their vital contribution to keeping the Island community safe.
Over 700 people are employed across the prison’s two sites, Parkhurst and Albany, yet, although the prison is well known on the Island, too little is known about the variety of jobs in the prison and the important work that goes on.
Mr Robertson said, “It was a privilege to present Hidden Heroes Awards to prison staff at HMP Isle of Wight. Keeping us safe isn't only about ensuring the prison is secure; it is also about ensuring when prisoners end their sentence, they can make a positive contribution to society and do not go on to reoffend. That is not possible without the hard work of the prison’s staff, so thank you to all our hidden heroes.”
The visit also gave Mr Robertson the chance to address a common misconception: prisoners from the mainland are not released on the Island at the end of their sentence.
